Hi, Tom.

What version of Debian are you trying to install there? I've downloaded
and installed Debian "whezzy" here with no problems.

DJ
I am trying to install DEBIAN s/390 for the first time and get the
following messages in the log.
I seem to get the same (or at least similar) messages regardless of which
mirror I try.
Can anyone point to my error?
Thanks
Tom

If you're using the s390x version of the installer, then the only release
that can currently be installed is wheezy (testing). To install an
earlier release, such as squeeze (stable), you must use the s390 version
of the installer, not the s390x version of the installer. Allow me to
explain. Debian, until recently, took a hybrid approach to the s390/s390x
environment. The kernel space was 64 bit, while the user space was 31 bit.
Thus, even when running on z-series processors, the architecture designation
was still s390. Wheezy is the first release to offer a complete s390x
architecture, where both kernel space and user space are 64 bit.

Tom, go here:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/wheezy_di_beta3/s390x/iso-dvd/

and downlaod the *.iso file for s390x. Use the z/VM installation files
that are in the .iso file as your starting point. I have just recently
done this on a z/VM 6.1 system and it does work as advertised.

Drop me a note if you run into any problems with this approach.

DJ
This may not be a good answer, but at this point I don't care what version.
The most current would of course be the best.
Here is what I have done so far.
1) Download the 4 files in 'generic'
2) Upload those files to CMS
3) Boot the installer LINUX and configure the network.
4) SSH to the installer LINUX
5) Try to run the installation
