Discussion:
What installer images should we provide for s390 and s390x?

Hi,

We had a brief discussion back in April about s390/s390x CD images,
but I'm still not clear on what people would like me to do here.

At the moment, on all other arches we currently create:

* small CDs (businesscard and netinst)
* full CD and DVD sets

For s390 we've never done the small CDs and just had the full
sets. For s390x we currently do nothing at all.

Should we just follow the normal conventions and do both types for
these arches too? Or is that just totally wasting space and time?

Steve,

I am looking for years to install Debian from a local DVD iso image and
never succeed because the install is looking for files in a tree not
matching the one in the iso image. Did you test that ?

Thanks
Alain

Hi Alain,

I'm not following you. Are you loop-mounting the DVD or similar? Is
this on s390?

Hello Steve,

I want to install Debian under z/VM at work from a local mode. Access to the
web is forbidden. The DVD iso is the only way to succeed... But the install
fails because iso folders tree doesn't match the one from the net. Files are
missing...

Hope I'm clear.

Regards
Alain

How are you mounting the image? "local mode" means nothing to me. You
should be able to mount a DVD just fine, with all the files you need
contained on it. Please give some examples...

I extract all the files from the iso and put them in the home of the FTP
server at work. During the install the integrity files are checked but
unfound. The install fails. The errors can be seen in the var syslog.
Do you have a VM to test this scenario ?

Does it help you ?

Nope, I don't have access to s390 hardware readily. If you have
logfile errors, please post them somewhere so I can help diagnose the
problem.

If you're doing ftp to a Windows server (*shudder*), then you've quite
possibly just corrupted all the line endings. You'll need to make sure
you download in BINARY format to stop this happening.

All the possible tests were made to go further. None succeeded.
- What am I suppose to do now ?
- Do you know if the S390 support team is aware of this ?
- How to contact them if they are not aware ?
- Does a NFS install makes sense to you ?

Thanks

All the possible tests were made to go further. None succeeded.
- What am I suppose to do now ?
If I understand correctly, you downloaded a single Release.gpg file and
put it inside a CD's content tree; that won't work at all, ever. Delete it
and keep just what was on the CD.

(Sidebar: No authentication keys are generated for CDs since a
self-checking CD would be security theater; apt-get on the CD can be
hacked to display a false "OK" message even if authentication failed. CDs
can/should instead be verified by external tools to match an externally
published signed checksum.)

Try booting the installer with:

install debian-installer/allow_unauthenticated=true

which should skip the entire GPG check. More info:

Okay, so this last URL is supposed to work, but please verify that this
URL works from another system (especially the // between debian and

Now this is... interesting. Do you have an FTP-server log that shows what
exactly is being attempted? In particular, is the _installer_ requesting
"/c:/" (which should fail) or is the FTP-server mistranslating into
"/c:/debian/" instead of "/c:/temp/debian/" as you mentioned earlier?

The installer is probably looking for either

ftp://192.168.1.77/debian/dists/squeeze/main/debian-installer/binary-s390/Packages

or

ftp://192.168.1.77/debian/dists/stable/main/debian-installer/binary-s390/Packages

(You should see which in your FTP-server log.)

My guess is that it's requesting /stable/ which does not exist because
your Windows system doesn't support symlinks.

So in your FTP tree, copy the entire "dists/squeeze" directory to a new
"dists/stable" directory, and verify that both above ftp:// URLs are
working.

If the installer works better now, please file a bug against
debian-installer that installing from (at least) FTP without /stable/
symlink fails even though other parts of the installer seem to work fine
without it, and refer to this mail thread
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-cd/2012/05/msg00096.html).

[In case this is really totally insurmountable inside the installer, it
might be an option to have "stable" be the real directory on CD/DVD, and
"squeeze" be the symlink. Though this would need some further testing. And
it would be somewhat undesirable since it won't match official FTP any
longer.]

We had a brief discussion back in April about s390/s390x CD images,
but I'm still not clear on what people would like me to do here.
I did not find any documentation about how to access the CD when it's put into
the Hardware Management Console. It's possible to boot a netinst installer
from it, because the HMC is able to load the relevant files (initrd, kernel,
options, etc.) into RAM by itself. The only use for the disc would be to
copy the tree to a local mirror or something. I think in general people would
be better off just doing a network install. But a netinst image would be
really helpful as it's a bit fiddly to boot Debian installer in a partition
otherwise.

Probably not the answer you wanted, though...

Kind regards

Yes...

Anybody else got an opinion? If I don't hear otherwise, I'm tempted to
do all the sets - I vaguely recall a conversation ages back with
somebody show claimed to use Debian on s390, but they'd never want to
connect it to the internet directly so they wanted CDs/DVDs for
packages even if they had to copy the contents elsewhere on their LAN.

Hmm. So the error is effectively the same, which probably means that a
duplicate /stable/ path wasn't needed. Keep it anyway, just in case.

At this point, it would help very much to have a log of your FTP server,
so we could see exactly what the installer is requesting.

Lacking that, my first thought was that you could somehow have a corrupted
debian-installer/binary-s390/Packages file.

But searching around a bit, I got on
http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12328 which suggested
that the installer may actually be trying to download a Packages.bz2 file,
which currently isn't generated on CDs.

So you could try adding a bzip2-compressed copy of the Packages file in
/{squeeze,stable}/main/debian-installer/binary-s390/ and also in
/{squeeze,stable}/main/binary-s390/. (How to do bzip2 on Windows is left
as an exercise to the reader.)

Note to the Debian-CD team:

It probably wouldn't hurt adding Packages.bz2 everywhere, to match what's
on the FTP mirrors.

A standard install from a CD in the CD drive will probably use the
non-zipped Packages file.

But did you recently try installing by FTP from a loop-mounted CD/DVD
image (starting the install by e.g. PXE boot or businesscard)? I did not,
and haven't got the time to, but I wouldn't be surprised if i386/amd64
show quite similar problems as now reported for s390.

I was reading the way to submit that bug to the support. Apparently I
"should" follow a specific format, but how to install reportbug and sending
the infos properly if I don't have a linux to do that ? I wouldn't see my
mail go to the bin ?

Thanks

Anna, steve,

I have reported the problem to the support. I found how to do that. And it was transfered to the team in charge of this kind of things.

Many thanks to you
Cordialement

Hmm. So the error is effectively the same, which probably means that a duplicate /stable/ path wasn't needed. Keep it anyway, just in case.
At this point, it would help very much to have a log of your FTP server, so we could see exactly what the installer is requesting.
Lacking that, my first thought was that you could somehow have a corrupted debian-installer/binary-s390/Packages file.
But searching around a bit, I got on http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12328 which suggested that the installer may actually be trying to download a Packages.bz2 file, which currently isn't generated on CDs.
So you could try adding a bzip2-compressed copy of the Packages file in /{squeeze,stable}/main/debian-installer/binary-s390/ and also in /{squeeze,stable}/main/binary-s390/. (How to do bzip2 on Windows is left as an exercise to the reader.)
It probably wouldn't hurt adding Packages.bz2 everywhere, to match what's on the FTP mirrors.
Best Regards,
Anne Bezemer
