Hi,

I've been installing Sarge RC2 on my Hercules (3.01).

Installation proceeds without a hitch, but when I try booting the new
DASD, this happens:

ipl 0120
HHCCP041I SYSCONS interface active
zIPL v1.3.1 interactive boot menu

0. default (debian)

1. debian
2. old

Please choose (default will boot in 10 seconds):

Any idea what the problem is? Should I wait for RC3?

Apparently, you are trying to IPL a z/Architecture kernel, but are
running hercules in ESA/390 mode.

You should specify "ESAME" in the architecture statement in the
configuration file so as to allow the SIGP architecture switch to
z/Architecture 64 bit mode to be successful... After that,
z/Architecture instruction will be recognized as such, registers will be
64 bits, etc..

HTH,

Ah. Obviously, the Debian Installer grabbed the wrong kernel.

HTH,
It does -- booting now. Thank you!

Hmm.. Aren't you given a kernel choice during the initial d-i run ?

Anyway,

When you boot the d-i base kernel, you will probably be running in 31
bit mode (which is a safe thing to do, since all post-IBM M/T 3090
systems can run 31 bit ESA)..
At this point, it is almost impossible for the install procedure to know
whether the system you are running on is or is not 64 bit capable..
(Machine Type doesn't count.. Since you can always pretend to be running
on something else)..

And even if the kernel issued the STFL (Store Facility List) or asked
about the hardware via a Service Call and then provided the information
to userland, it still wouldn't be reliable since some support platforms
can be switched afterwards (like you just did !)

I very much doubt that will fix it. Both RC2 and the current "pre RC3"
install without problems on the self-compiled Hercules 3.02 I run on my
Toshiba Satellite A40 (Pentium 4) laptop.
I also successfully installed RC2 several times on a self-compiled
Hercules 3.01.

Cheers,
FJP

I've been installing Sarge RC2 on my Hercules (3.01).
RC2 will not install the right kernel since the package sync for RC3. This
is a known but yet unfixed problem.
